GALVESTON, Texas - Ernestine (Tina) Cuellar, an assistant professor in the School of Nursing at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, received the National Sojourner Truth Meritorious Service Award on April 26. The award is sponsored by the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs Inc. 

The presentation was made at the Houston League of Business and Professional Women's 44th Annual Founders' Day Sojourner Truth Crystal Awards Luncheon and Business Fair.

The award is in recognition for professor Cuellar's "meritorious community service, deep concern for and participation in all activities advancing the status of women." The Houston organization nominated Cuellar for the award.

Cuellar serves as a faculty member in the UTMB Center for Ethics, Health Law and Policy. She is also a major in the Air Force Reserve, serving as Wing program director for suicide and violence prevention training and is a squadron program director for mental health. Cuellar has deployed to Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Germany.
