GALVESTON, Texas - Things are looking brighter for Friendswood area residents.
The first multi-specialty ophthalmology treatment center to serve the Friendswood area is now open. The UTMB University Eye Center at Friendswood is located at 400 W. Parkwood Ave., Suite 120, near the intersection of South Friendswood Drive.
Affiliated with the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston department of ophthalmology and visual sciences - one of the nation's leading centers for research and treatment of eye diseases - the eye center has specialists in a range of eye conditions and services including:
- Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
- Diabetic-related eye diseases
- Diseases of the retina
- Cataracts
- Glaucoma
- Pediatric ophthalmology
- Adult strabismus
- Refractive surgery/LASIK
- Cosmetic procedures, including eyelid surgery and BOTOX

According to Dr. Erik van Kuijk, department vice chair for clinical services, the AMD imaging technology at the center is the best in the area: "It allows us to see changes at the near-microscopic level in advance of when they would be detected with standard equipment."
