Free mini-classes, health screenings and vendor fair

GALVESTON, Texas - Area residents who are 55 and older are invited to attend Senior Summer Camp 2008 Friday, Aug. 22, at Moody Memorial First United Methodist Church, 2803 53rd St., in Galveston. The camp will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Seniors and caregivers of seniors can attend a variety of 45-minute seminars on topics ranging from line dancing to techniques to avoid financial exploitation. Other topics include card games, picture painting, jewelry making, floral arranging, investing and Tai Chi.

In addition, 86 vendors representing businesses and institutions from throughout Galveston/Houston area will fill an exhibition hall. Free health screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar, hearing, lung function, glucose and others also will be offered. Campers will receive a free sack lunch and there will be door prizes.

"We expect to have more people attending than the 800-900 who came last year," said Margaret "Penny" Davis, a community education specialist with UTMB's Senior Services Office and coordinator of the camp. "It's a great opportunity for seniors and caregivers to learn about all kinds of services in our area and attend 45-minute classes on everything from fishing to makeup techniques."

Registration is not required for the camp. Those who attend are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing.

The annual summer camp is sponsored by the Senior Services Office at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Moody Memorial First United Methodist Church, Senior News, SelectCare/Texan Plus and Benno's Catering. The camp is open to seniors and their caregivers.
