GALVESTON, Texas - At a dinner among medical students and their mentor, Dr. Michael Malloy, the conversation turned to Halloween and how some parts of Galveston might not be safe for trick or treaters.

That conversation set things in motion for a Halloween carnival for the children of Galveston. The carnival will be held this Friday, Oct. 31 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the plaza of Moody Medical Library on the campus of the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.

Malloy, mentor of the Blackwell Osler Student society, said, "We were concerned because of all the reconstruction and debris that might inhibit Halloween activities, and we thought it would be nice to provide an opportunity for children to wear their costumes and enjoy Halloween in a safe environment."

The event, which is being organized by several other Osler societies and the UTMB Children's Hospital, will offer games, a costume contest, healthy snacks and, yes, candy.

Free parking will be available across the street from the library, located near the intersection of Ninth and Market streets.

In addition, UTMB and Galveston community volunteers will distribute school supplies and well as clothing and food to help families victimized by Hurricane Ike.

Brian Telesz, one of the students at the dinner, said, "We realized that UTMB and the Galveston community were in need of an event to bring the fun back into Galveston. We realized that some Galveston neighborhoods were not safe for kids to go trick or treating."
