GALVESTON, Texas - Dr. Gary Hankins, chairman of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, has been named one of America's top doctors for women in the November issue of Women's Health.

He was selected in the obstetrics and gynecology category. Only 16 physicians nationwide were included. Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., publishers of America's Top Doctors, collaborated with the magazine on the selections.

"The university is fortunate to have Dr. Hankins who is highly regarded nationally and internationally in the area of high risk pregnancy care and research," said Dr. Garland Anderson, dean of the UTMB School of Medicine. 

Hankins is the Jennie Sealy Smith Distinguished Professor at UTMB. He has been included in the America's Top Doctors listing for the past four years.

Before coming to UTMB, he served for nine years as the chairman of obstetrics and gynecology for Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio.

Hankins earned a medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University's Medical College of Virginia and completed a residency at the Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base. Hankins also completed two fellowship programs: One in critical care medicine at Wilford Hall and the other in maternal-fetal medicine from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas.

He is the author or co-author of more than 180 articles, 30 book chapters, nine books and 300 abstracts. He earned a Gold Headed Cane Award for the physician most representative of the highest ethics in medicine from Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center. He currently serves as the chairman of the obstetric practice committee for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
