GALVESTON, Texas - Dr. Robert M.A. Hirschfeld, chairman of the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, has been named one of America's top doctors for women in the November issue of Women's Health.

He was selected in the psychiatry category. Only 16 physicians nationwide were included. Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., publishers of America's Top Doctors, collaborated with the magazine on the selections.

"Dr. Hirschfeld is an international expert on bipolar disorder and depression, and the university is fortunate to have him," said Dr. Garland D. Anderson, executive vice president and provost of UTMB.

Before coming to UTMB, he spent 18 years at the National Institute of Mental Health, where he was Chief of the Mood, Anxiety and Personality Disorders Research Branch, and was the Clinical Director of NIMH's Depression/Awareness, Recognition and Treatment (D/ART) Program.

Hirschfeld received his Bachelor of Science degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his medical degree from the University of Michigan. He received a Master of Science in operations research from Stanford University and completed his residency in psychiatry at Stanford University Medical Center.

He has written more than 200 scientific papers and abstracts in leading scientific and medical journals, and has contributed chapters on mood and anxiety disorders in four major psychiatric textbooks, as well as in nearly two dozen other books on psychiatry. He served as chairman of both the original and the revision of the American Psychiatric Association's Workgroup to Develop Practice Guidelines for Treatment of Patients with Bipolar Disorders.

Hirschfeld holds the Titus H. Harris Chair at UTMB and is the recipient of numerous honors, including the prestigious Edward A. Strecker M.D. Award and the Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians Psychiatric Excellence Award. He is listed among The Best Doctors in America and America's Top Doctors.
