GALVESTON, Texas - The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston has been recognized by the Association of American Medical Colleges as a finalist for the 2008 AAMC Spencer Foreman Award for Outstanding Community Service.
UTMB was one of three finalists selected for the award, which is presented annually to an institution or organization with a "long-standing, major institutional commitment to addressing community needs." "I am pleased that the AAMC recognized the strength of UTMB's community service efforts, and I extend my appreciation to everyone on campus who participated in the application process," said Dr. Garland Anderson, executive vice president and provost and dean of the School of Medicine. "UTMB has a rich legacy of serving the community through exceptional programs and contributions throughout the institution. This strong tradition of service has made a positive impact on the Galveston community, and continues today."
The selection process included a written application and a site team visit to the campus to review the institution's community service projects. Some of the programs citied for community efforts include the Regional Maternal and Child Health Program, Frontera de Salud, Summer Science Camps for middle and high school students, community health fairs, and partnerships with numerous social, educational and community organizations and groups.
