UTMB's Raul Reyes is quoted in this article about the use of live animals in an advanced trauma class taught at UTMB. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, an animal rights group with ties to PETA, has asked UTMB and 15 other universities to stop using live animals for these types of classes. "Mannequin models do exist for many of the procedures we teach, and we do use them," Reyes said. "However, when it comes to procedures such as cricothyroidotomy (known as emergency tracheotomy), simulators and mannequins don't replicate the condition well enough to make them suitable for training doctors to perform this and other lifesaving procedures." http://galvestondailynews.com/story.lasso?ewcd=4ffafb0eb491aaae
