GALVESTON, Texas - A newly-published textbook on vaccines for biodefense and emerging infectious diseases was authored by world experts on these diseases including researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston

Drs. Alan Barrett and Lawrence Stanberry co-edited the 1,488-page text, Vaccines for Biodefense and Emerging and Neglected Diseases, which was published this month by Academic Press. Barrett is director of UTMB's Sealy Center for Vaccine Development, and Stanberry is the former director of the vaccine center and now a faculty member at Columbia University. Nineteen of the book's 69 chapters were written by UTMB researchers.

"The book contains a comprehensive overview of the viral, bacterial and parasitic agents that are responsible for emerging and neglected diseases, and those that can be used as a biothreat," Barrett said. It also includes detailed information on issues such as the vaccine development pathway, vaccine manufacturing, regulatory issues, and chapters on vaccine safety.

Vaccines is the most up-to-date text available in the field, he said.
