Dr. David L. Callender testified Wednesday before the House Appropriations committee that was considering a proposal that could send more than $350 million to UTMB to help recover from Hurricane Ike. “UTMB is important not only to Galveston, but statewide, since patients have come for treatment from other parts of Texas,” officials noted. It’s also particularly important to Harris County, which it has served as a trauma center. “I actually fear that some patients may be dying because we don’t have our full capacity back on line,” Callender said.
