GALVESTON, Texas - The time when 200 graduating medical students at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston learn where they will continue their education is drawing near. Match Day is this Thursday, March 19.

The 11 a.m. event at UTMB's Levin Hall will be dedicated to the graduating students for their dedication and perseverance in achieving their goals in the face of the chaos and confusion caused by Hurricane Ike. More than 40 members of graduating class are from Harris County or Houston.

"I'm extremely proud of this class," said Dr. Lauree Thomas, associate dean for student affairs. "Many lost their homes, possessions, textbooks, computers and their clothes. But here they are, ready to embark on their residencies. Through all of this, our students have garnered some of the most competitive programs across the country, which is a true testimony to their talents, training and education here at UTMB."

Dr. Garland D. Anderson,  dean of the School of Medicine, said that he was "proud of our students and of our faculty and staff who worked so hard to ensure that our third- and fourth-year students could continue their clinical rotations, despite the challenges caused by Hurricane Ike."

Prior to Match Day, students list three preferences regarding a specialty as well as a location. Match Day is held annually to announce the results of the National Resident Matching Program that pairs graduating medical students with residency programs throughout the country.

During the Match Day ceremonies at UTMB, envelopes with students' names will be randomly selected. The envelopes contain the information stating where they will receive residency training in their chosen specialty. As seniors pick up their envelope, they drop a dollar into a large bowl. The last member of the class called to get an envelope receives the money in the bowl.
