Beach Babies 2009 conference set for April 17-18

GALVESTON, Texas - Terry S. Johnson, a nationally known neonatal nurse practitioner, will headline the second annual neonatal nursing conference to be held April 17-18 at the Galveston Island Convention Center, 5600 Seawall Blvd.

Presented by the neonatal nurseries at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Beach Babies 2009 "Braving the Storm" will review current trends and offer practical innovations in neonatal care.

"This conference is a true learning experience on the significant and challenging aspects of neonatal practice," said Debbie Barrera, assistant nurse manager for UTMB's infant special care unit. "It's chock-full of continuing education credits and good times too."

Nurses, nurse practitioners, therapists and other health professionals involved in the care of newborns will benefit from the conference offerings, she said.

Confirmed speakers include, among others, Dr. Joan Richardson, medical director of the infant special care unit and chairwoman of the department of pediatrics; and neonatologists Dr. Cara Geary and Dr. Karen Shattuck. Shattuck will discuss evacuating the ICU in a disaster.

The university delivers and cares for 7,000 babies annually with 18 percent of those deliveries deemed high risk - nearly 10 percent above the national average.

Early registration for the conference ends April 11, but registration will continue through the 17th and can be completed at the door. A total of 14 continuing education credits are available for nurses and physical, occupational and respiratory therapists.
