Galveston County Daily News, March 21, 2009UTMB's Dr. Ben Raimer is quoted in this article about a proposal by the Harris County Medical Society to make St. Joseph's Medical Center in Houston a Level 1 Trauma Center because UTMB's trauma center has yet to reopen. The society's proposal calls for using UTMB physicians to staff St. Joseph's. "They're not indentured servants," said Raimer. "Many live on the island just blocks away from [UTMB]. It's an unrealistic expectation that we could just send faculty anywhere we told them to go; that's not the way life works." UTMB's Dr. Thomas Kimbrough, who is president of the Galveston County Medical Society, says: "I think that for the long-term the region needs to look at trauma care. If another trauma care center is needed in addition to one reopening at UTMB, there needs to be careful consideration where that might be. Some people think it might need to be in the Beaumont-Port Arthur area."
