In their Keeping Kids Health column, UTMB Drs. Sally Robinson and Keith Bly write that parents should put a newborn child to sleep on his or her back or side and never on his or her stomach, and that studies have found that soft surfaces increase the distance an infant would have to lift his or her head to get a breath of air, so a firm mattress for a crib is best.
