Guest column: Shriners burn hospital in Galveston desperately needs money to reopen

Beaumont Enterprise, March 28, 2009UTMB’s Dr. David Herndon, who is also chief of staff at the Shriners Hospital, is quoted in this column about the need for the children’s burn treatment center to reopen. “In the 1960s, the likelihood of survival was only 50 percent for pediatric burns covering 35-44 percent of the TBSA (total body surface area), and few patients with burn sizes above 45 percent TBSA survived. Today, the LA50 (lethal burn size for 50 percent of the patients) for children exceeds 95 percent TBSA.”
