Heber Taylor, editor of the Galveston paper, praises UTMB's Dr. Susan McCammon's column published last week that made the case for the use of live animals for training physicians to deal with emergency procedures. "McCammon gave a balanced, knowledgeable view. She knows about the $23,000 simulators but is not convinced they are as effective. I am convinced her column was important for a couple of reasons. ... [C]olumns on controversial topics are becoming rarer from people within public institutions. Often, experts who speak out are chastised for dealing with the noisy, disagreeable public, rather than focusing on their ‘real' job. That policy is not just shortsighted. It's idiotic."
