UTMB’s Jim Kelso is quoted in this article about pending legislation that would keep information about select agents in laboratories, such as the ones at UTMB, confidential. The proposal would bring Texas in line with federal law, Kelso said. “Because it's such a hot topic, people are probing to find out what level of information we’ll provide them,” Kelso said, noting that the Galveston National Lab has even received a request for door-access codes. “What we hope by this bill is that we'll have a much easier way to protect the information.”
