GALVESTON, Texas - The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston has received a $2 million award from the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Postsecondary Education to help recover from damages caused by Hurricane Ike.

"We are thrilled about this Higher Education Disaster Relief Grant," said Pamela G. Watson, vice president for education. "We are proud of what we have accomplished in rallying after the storm. This funding will mean so much to us in our constant quest for academic excellence and our determination to succeed."

The disaster relief program provides grants to institutions of higher education that are located in areas affected by hurricanes, floods and other natural disasters that were declared a major disaster by the president. Funds are used to cover lost revenue, reimbursement for expenses already incurred and for construction. UTMB will use its grant to enhance interprofessional simulation learning centers and to replace lost equipment.
