UTMB's Drs. Sally Robinson and Keith Bly, in their Keeping Kids Healthy column, advise parents to make sure that children wear a helmet when riding a bike. Citing information from the American Academy of Pediatrics, they write that the organization "recommends helmets for all children older than 1 year even when riding as a passenger in a bike-mounted child seat or a bike-towed trailer, or on tricycles or other wheeled vehicles or toys. Children younger than 1 shouldn't wear helmets because their neck muscles aren't strong enough to support a helmet."
