This report about the School of Medicine's commencement features Gold-Headed Cane winner Dr. John Ray and Dr. Kristopher Hooten, the 2009 class speaker. Hooten spent three months working in Temple to complete graduation requirements. In a speech to his classmates, Hooten shared the advice he got from his father who passed away from Lou Gehrig's disease: "To remember the purpose for becoming a doctor and that purpose will carry you through life." Ray led a singing group called "Don't Quit Your Daytime Job" in a Galveston-rendition of the old Dust-Bowl ballad "My Oklahoma Home" redone as "Galveston - It Blowed Away."
