GALVESTON, Texas - Dr. Howard Brody, professor in the department of family medicine and director of the Institute for the Medical Humanties at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, has received the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award. The award recognizes outstanding contributions and significant publications that have helped shape the direction of the fields of bioethics and the medical humanities.

Brody is renowned for his expertise in medical ethics and the issues surrounding health care and research. He specializes in the field of philosophy and bioethics, and has taught and lectured widely in this area. A prolific writer, Brody has written numerous highly respected books and articles on medical ethics, family medicine and philosophy of medicine.

He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Annual Award from the Society for Health and Human Values, the College of Human Medicine Distinguished Faculty Award and the Michigan State University Distinguished Faculty Award. Brody has held leadership positions in organizations at the state and national levels. He served as president of the Society for Health and Human Values and was chairman of the Michigan Commission on Death and Dying. In 1995, he was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.

Brody received his medical degree from the College of Human Medicine, Michigan State University, and holds a doctorate in philosophy, also from Michigan State University. He joined UTMB in 2006.
