UTMB's Dr. Michael Warren acknowledges in his weekly column that doctors are well-paid but writes that high pay often is the result of working long hours, leaving little time for quality of life: "The doctor awoke at 5 a.m., had a quick breakfast and got to the hospital by 6:30 a.m. He made rounds and went to a second hospital to make sure his patients there are doing well also. He then reported to the operating room by 7:30 a.m. for three operations he completed by 1 p.m. Then he rushed to his office to see patients until 7 p.m. Then, it was back to the hospital to visit more patients before going home at 9 p.m. (This is usually where he falls asleep and misses dinner, but it doesn't matter as it's cold now anyway.)"
