GALVESTON, Texas— The University of Texas Medical Branch recognized the AT&T Foundation Monday, July 10, for their $1 million grant to support the AT&T Center for Telehealth Research and Policy at UTMB. The ceremony was held in one of the telemedicine studio suites where UTMB physicians see more than 60,000 patients each year. AT&T representative Barry Beasley, director of external affairs, presented UTMB president John D. Stobo, M.D., a $200,000 check, the fifth installment of the total award. Texas legislators Rep.Craig Eiland and Michael Wright from Sen. Kyle Janek’s office also attended.
The $200,000 will help to fund a joint research effort between the UTMB Center and the prestigious Center for Information Technology Leadership in Boston, scheduled to begin in September.
The AT&T Center for Research and Policy serves as the research arm of the UTMB Electronic Health Network, one of the largest telemedicine programs in the world. UTMB has the only program in the United States dedicated to conducting outcomes-based research using rigorous scientific methods to demonstrate the effectiveness of teletechnology in health care. UTMB Electronic Health Network earned a "Best of Texas" award last year for their integrated electronic medical records and telemedicine.
