GALVESTON, Texas — Galveston County seniors can escape the summer heat, learn and have fun at the 2006 Senior Summer Camp Thursday, Aug. 24, at Moody Memorial First United Methodist Church, 2803 53rd St., in Galveston.

The second annual indoor camp will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Seniors are encouraged to wear camp clothing. There is no charge and a box lunch will be provided.

“It was a ball last year and the seniors are all excited about it again,” said M.L. (Penny) Davis, of the Senior Services Office at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. “Even the providers and vendors are eager. They said it is the best and most unusual one they have attended. Due to the camping concept and dressing as campers, everyone is relaxed and friendly.” UTMB and Libbie’s Place Adult Day Service sponsor the camp.

In addition to health and fitness screenings, including cholesterol, blood pressure, glucose, hearing, chiropractic and vision, campers have a choice of attending numerous classes. A partial list of classes include Social Security Help With Prescription Drug Problems, Dream Vacation on a Limited Budget, Non-surgical Options for Losing Weight, Old Salt Fishing Secrets, Brain Aerobics, Golf Clinic by South Shore Harbor Pro, Look 10 Years Younger Without Surgery, How and Where to Purchase A Hearing Aid, Identity Theft and New Scams, arts and craft classes and What Happens When You Call 911.

Exhibits of products and services for seniors and caregivers will be held in the church gymnasium, Davis said. Representatives of the Social Security Administration, Young Attorney’s Association of Galveston, the Galveston County Health District and other agencies will answer questions.
