Dr. Robert M.A. Hirschfeld, chairman of the department of psychiatry at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, is the recipient of the 2010 Award for Research in Mood Disorders from the American College of Psychiatrists. 

The award, which consists of a certificate and a $1,000 honorarium, will be given at the ACP’s annual meeting on Feb. 27, 2010, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. 

According to the ACP, the annual award is given to an individual who has advanced the understanding and treatment of mood disorders and displayed excellence and dedication in the field of mood disorder research. 

Hirschfeld is an international expert on bipolar disorder and depression. His work has led to recognition by the publications “Best Doctors in America” and “America’s Top Doctors,” as well as other major national and international awards.
