GALVESTON, Texas — The John A. Hartford Foundation Institute for Geriatric Nursing at the New York University College of Nursing has named Cheryl Lehman, a clinical nurse specialist at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, to be a scholar in its 2006 Geriatric Nursing Research Scholars Program.

Lehman was selected for having conducted significant research in gerontologic nursing and for her leadership potential. She is one of 14 nurses selected for this program from a national pool of applicants. The program, in its ninth year, and cosponsored by the American Journal of Nursing, is designed to foster new gerontological nursing researchers. The scholars attended a weeklong seminar led by Elizabeth Capezuti at New York University’s College of Nursing in July.

Lehman’s research involves measuring patient outcomes associated with Acute Care for the Elderly hospital units. A registered nurse, Lehman earned a Ph.D. in 2005 in preventive medicine and community health.

“It was a tremendous honor to be chosen as a research scholar at the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing,” Lehman said. “The opportunity to meet and work closely with national nursing leaders in gerontology was invaluable. I plan to take full advantage of the guidance and support to develop a research plan to demonstrate the value of ACE care for the hospitalized elderly patient.”

“Our program aims to bring together outstanding new scholars who are conducting significant research in gerontologic nursing and to give them an opportunity to interact with leading experts in the field,” says Capezuti, co-director of the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing.
