GALVESTON, Texas – Thirty-two physicians and medical specialists will describe new techniques and innovations in the care and training of athletes at a sports medicine conference beginning Friday, June 30, at the Galveston Island Convention Center, 5500 Seawall Blvd.
The two-day, 22-hour workshop will explore what’s new and what’s tried and true from the hamstring to the sacroiliac joint to the wrists and knees, said Dr. Frank M. Ivey, director of the University of Texas Medical Branch sports medicine program
“This year we have special presentations on how to care for athletes with diabetes or epilepsy; how to decrease the number of ACL injuries in female athletes; and how to recognize blood doping and the effects of human growth hormone in athletic performance,” Ivey said.
Other offerings include: new ways to evaluate and treat athletes with neck and arm pain, the role of fat in the athlete’s diet, treating elbow instability and the proper use of knee braces, he said.
Sponsored by the Department of Orthopaedic Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, the conference is of special interest to physicians, coaches, athletic trainers, physical therapists, physician assistants and others with an interest in the medical care and treatment of athletes.
