Medical experts to discuss County Reads book March 6, 2006 Galveston County Daily News (Internet / Print) 03/06/06 http://news.galvestondailynews.com/story.lasso?ewcd=ef99ac8f893c2754 As a pediatric psychologist, Virginia Niebuhr was intrigued when she picked up a copy of a fictional account of a teenager with a developmental disorder. When she read “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” Niebuhr said, the tale of a 15-year-old boy’s struggles to interact within society’s boundaries was more than she bargained for. “It’s an amazing portrayal of an autistic disorder,” said Niebuhr, also a professor of pediatrics at the University of Texas Medical Branch. “A lot of my patients’ characteristics were coming at me right off the pages.” Niebuhr and two other medical experts in developmental disorders will discuss the book, the 2006 Galveston County Reads selection, at a public forum Thursday at UTMB’s Levin Hall. The panel includes Dwight Wolf, a professor and director of outpatient psychiatry at UTMB; and Patricia Beach, director of UTMB’s division of general pediatrics. The panel moderator is Glennda Rassin, a clinical assistant professor and senior counseling specialist. « Back | The Newsroom »
