Could Ginkgo Prevent Ovarian Cancer? March 20, 2006 O – The Oprah Magazine (Internet / Print) April 2006 http://www.oprah.com/omagazine/ (no direct weblink available) Breaking research by scientists at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston suggests that the herb ginkgo biloba may lower the risk of developing ovarian cancer. Daniel W. Cramer, MD, and Bin Ye, PhD, questioned more than 1,300 women with and without ovarian cancer about their use of herbal supplements. Cramer says additional studies are needed before recommending ginkgo to all women. If you’re at high risk for ovarian cancer, however (family history, BRCA genes), you might consider trying the herb now. The standard dose is 120 to 240 milligrams a day, according to Victor S. Sierpina, MD, professor of integrative medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. But let your doctor know that you’re taking it: Ginkgo inhibits clotting and must be used cautiously, if at all, with blood-thinning drugs. « Back | The Newsroom »
