Galveston County Daily News (Internet / Print) 03/19/06 http://news.galvestondailynews.com/story.lasso?ewcd=21f903dd95c8de39 Most public places are a haven for once loved items now waiting to be claimed. Wallets, keys, cell phones and umbrellas find refuge in boxes and drawers alongside more bizarre objects. Personal possessions unclaimed for too long are often destroyed within 30 to 60 days or, whenever possible, donated to local charities and shelters. Capt. Sandy Turner of the University of Texas Medical Branch police department said most people come back and claim items within a week because of a method of logging items on a Web site, www.utmb.edu/police/lost.htm. Items are updated immediately and kept online for 60 days. In 2005, UTMB recovered more than 700 items. Among them were badges, pagers and stethoscopes. Aside from items that belong to the hospital, Turner said that staff, faculty and students have recovered some strange personal possessions. “The strangest thing was a set of dentures,” he said. “The dentures take the cake.”
