Galveston County Daily News (Internet / Print) 03/23/06 http://news.galvestondailynews.com/story.lasso?ewcd=e772c7ee7b715d2f&page=all Where is the best place in Galveston County to volunteer? The short answer is where you feel called to serve. Nearly every nonprofit agency in the county is in the market for volunteers. The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston also welcomes volunteers. The UTMB Hospitals Auxiliary was founded in 1960. Every year, the auxiliary awards grants to various patient units and programs. According to the UTMB Web site, the auxiliary has contributed more than $61,000 to UTMB in the last five years. The UTMB Caring Clowns make their rounds, lifting spirits and providing a temporary distraction to patients, allowing them to focus on something other than their health challenges — if only for a moment. The hospitals’ volunteer services department provides an annual training workshop for new applicants. Space is limited and a nominal fee is charged to cover supplies.
