Galveston County Daily News (Internet / Print) 03/24/06 http://news.galvestondailynews.com/story.lasso?ewcd=5b4dcf0f49e9457b The coming hurricane season promises to be at least as bad as 2005’s — the worst on record, Galveston City Manager Steve LeBlanc said Thursday. With hurricane season 70 days away, LeBlanc updated the city council on steps the city has taken to be ready. City officials met recently with their Austin counterparts, who said they would feed, shelter and provide medications for needy Galvestonians. The University of Texas Medical Branch will do triage at the community center and provide medical services at the emergency operation center, the mass shelter in Austin and at any shelter of last resort. The city will use the new justice center as its emergency operations center for minor hurricanes. In major storms, it will move to the San Luis Resort, the University of Texas Medical Branch, the Moody Gardens Convention Center “or anyplace else the mayor decides she wants to commandeer,” LeBlanc said.
