The Galveston Wharves Board of Trustees, which oversees port operations, voted this week to allow Metro International Trade Services to set up warehouse operations at Pier 37. The company could expand to Pier 39 and 40 at the underutilized west end of the port. Separately, the board voted to proceed with work to move the traffic signals at Harborside Drive and 16th Street two blocks east to 14th Street, matching up with the new east-end port security entrance. The port will act as general contractor for the work, expected to cost about $150,000. The Houston-Galveston Area Council is expected to contribute $133,500, and, port staff said, the University of Texas Medical Branch has pledged $20,000.
