The growing magnitude of the possibilities — both good and bad — that are offered by greater knowledge of biological regulatory systems, the ability to manipulate microorganisms in ways unimagined a few decades ago and the potential to construct wholly synthetic life forms, demands of life scientists greater responsibility and broader realization of the implications of their work.
