Boston University Cleared to Build High-Security Bio Lab February 21, 2006 Columbia Spectator (Internet / Print) 02/21/06 http://www.columbiaspectator.com/vnews/display.v/ART/2006/02/21/43fabad5e5eab The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services gave Boston University the final go-ahead last Thursday to build a Biosafety Level 4 laboratory, a high-security facility that would allow researchers to experiment with potentially lethal microbes right in Boston’s South End. BU would join the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston to become only the second university to host such a lab. Many students, politicians, and residents of Boston’s South End have voiced concerns about possible health hazards in the urban location. Opponents fear that they would be helpless if any of the microbes from lab were accidentally released into the surrounding area. « Back | The Newsroom »
