San Antonio Express-News (Internet / Print) 02/26/06 http://www.mysanantonio.com/opinion/stories/MYSA022606.3H.landa.1b873dc3.html A researcher at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston coined a phrase some 20 years ago to explain a social and statistical oddity. In 1986, Kyriakos Markides found a disparity between the conventional wisdom concerning poverty and the reality his research uncovered. He found that the Hispanic community registers fewer deaths from cancer and heart disease and has a lower infant mortality rate and longer life expectancy — in spite of the community's predominantly low socioeconomic level. He called it the "Hispanic paradox." And a recent article in the Houston Chronicle says that all these years later, he's still looking into it.
