They bought homes and contributed to the tax base. They volunteered in community causes. They sent their kids to schools that were just down the road from the plants. Company officials assured residents then — as they do now — that their plants were safe. The words of those assurances are similar. But the message comes across a bit differently when it’s delivered by people who live down the street. Mayor Matt Doyle has a point. And it’s not just applicable to BP. Other companies in Galveston County operate plants that handle materials that can affect public safety.
