The scenes in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina illustrated those problems, he said. “We marginalize too many people, and those are often people of color,” he said. For Williams, though, the issue is not so much about race. “In his later years, Dr. King realized that the struggle was really for people living in poverty,” Williams said. Williams said he hoped people would treat the King holiday as more than a day off. “I hope they use it to reflect on exactly what Dr. King wanted for our society,” he said. “If people really reflected on that, I think it would make it easier for us to achieve what we need to achieve.”
